Laser Cutting Lamp Design
IDEATION
In my initial idea, I wanted to make a kind of light box that can use lights and shadows to illuminate different patterns. Because my moodboard is Organic, I thought of the theme of stars. Using the light projection of the light box can create the feeling of a starry sky, so I started to make it in this direction.
I think that there can be different layers in a light box, so that the patterns illuminated will be more and more interesting. I originally planned to make three layers, the first layer is stars, the second layer is curved lines to create an effect similar to the Milky Way, and the last layer is beveled lines for decoration.
I made the outer frame of the light box into a square of 85mm x 85mm, and made it 45mm thick, and I made the bottom and top pieces 90mm to avoid insufficient length when placing the support plates on both sides.
After this, I put the cardboard into the Laser cutter and let the machine cut out each of my sides and layers for me.
After the laser cut out, I found that the stars I cut were too few and the whole light could not pass through, so I cut some star patterns later to ensure the light transmission.
MY FINAL LASER CUTTING LMAP
I think my design this time is not as good as the 3D printed project. I didn’t control the distance between each layer properly, so some cut holes didn’t allow the light to pass through.  But I used the rest of the time to make up for this shortcoming, so I think this design is still a very good-looking decoration, which can be used as a sleeping light or ambient light in the room.  I also think that more improvements can be made to this design, for example, the frame can be modified into a more oragnic shape to increase interest, but the material limitation is not enough for me to make another lamp, so I think it is a pity  .  In the next design, I feel that I need to think about the material and time constraints in advance before taking action, so as to make the design that satisfies me the most.
